What are dental appliances for sleep apnea?

Dental appliances are a dental technology that can push the jaw forward to prevent the tongue from blocking the throat, such devices are used during sleep to keep continuous positive airway pressure open and let you have a good night’s sleep.

Sleep apnea is a serious health issue; tooth grinding is the first sign that usually starts to show which can either cause tooth wear or a gum disease just because teeth can be more susceptible to cavities. Periodontists at Trident Smiles Dental will customize your dental appliances treatment options based on your goals, preferences, and what suits you best to handle your sleep apnea case with proper care.

Teeth Grinding

We use a variety of innovative designs depending on your treatment goals and preferences. Teeth are the hardest substance in our bodies and can withstand a tremendous amount of force. But damage can occur, especially when grinding forces start to wear them away.

What are the symptoms of sleep apnea?

  • Snoring
  • Night Sweats
  • Daytime Fatigue
  • Headaches

What to expect during your first visit?

As soon as you visit us in Sunnyvale, your dedicated dentist will determine which type of oral appliances are suitable to give you complete relief from your sleep apnea. To do so, your dentist will first examine your mouth and take an impression of your teeth to spot any abnormalities to fix.

Right after that, your dental appliances will be ready and our team of experts will make sure to show you how to use it. A follow-up appointment will then be scheduled. Your dentist will show you how to use it, and you’ll likely be asked to have a follow-up appointment to make sure everything is working fine.

Taking care of your dental appliances

Cleaning

  • Rinse immediately after wearing and let it dry before putting it in a case
  • Use liquid dish detergent or hand soap to clean your appliance. A little mild soap plus warm water will do a great cleaning job. While you’re at it, get a brush just for the appliance — because, while it’s fine for plastic, you don’t want to brush your teeth with soap!
  • Put a towel in the sink basin when you clean your appliance. Soapy appliances (especially dentures) can be slippery, and can be damaged by dropping — and that’s an expensive mishap.
  • Consider investing in an ultrasonic cleaner. These inexpensive countertop devices are an excellent way to get the tiny ridges and crevices of your appliance really clean.

Case

  • Always store your night guard in a case. When you are not wearing your night guard it is important that you keep it stored in a case. Many people store their night guard in their bathroom, but over time the steam and humidity in the bathroom can cause the night guard to warp. We recommend that you keep the night guard stored in your bedroom or on your nightstand instead. Be careful not to store your night guard anywhere subject to extreme hot or cold temperatures.
  • Cleaning your night guard can become a wasted effort if you put a clean night guard into a dirty case. Keep the case clean by hand washing it every few days with regular dishwashing soap or castile soap. Avoid placing the case in the dishwasher as the high temperature may melt or warp the plastic. After washing, allow the case to dry as to prevent bacteria growth.
