What is the teeth whitening treatment?

Professional teeth whitening is a simple procedure to break stains and have your teeth look brighter. This pain-free, stress-free and tear-free procedure is often desirable when teeth turn yellow. It is usually done by changing the intrinsic or extrinsic color of the tooth enamel.

At Trident, a cosmetic dentist will make sure to plan suitable whitening solutions for any new patient to create brighter smiles all year long. The whole procedure is carefully planned to protect teeth from damage and ensure that no other oral health concerns are involved.

Why do you need an in-office whitening treatment?

Below are some of the reasons that call for teeth whitening:

  • Smoking: Nicotine leaves brown stains on teeth.
  • Age: Over the years, teeth tend to darken as a result of stain accumulation.
  • Thinness: In some cases, genetic traits play a role in letting teeth become more transparent with less pigment.
  • Eating Habits: Coffee, tea, and acidic food can contribute to letting your teeth surface become more yellowish.

What are the benefits of a whitening procedure?

After having your teeth whitened, enjoy:

  • A confidence boost
  • A beautiful smile
  • Good oral health

The in-office whitening procedure

Step 1 :Your Sunnyvale dentist will start by assessing the color of your teeth to get a better idea of the current shade of your teeth.

Step 2: Next, your dentist will clean your teeth, and get rid of existing plaque to have the surface prepared for the whitening agent.

Step 3: It’s whitening time! Your dentist will apply whitening gel on the esthetic zone and the gel will work on opening up the pores of the teeth to whiten them.

Step 4: 15 to 30 minutes after bleaching, your dentist will ask you to rinse your mouth so he can measure the change in shade. Last step would be to brush your teeth with fluoride varnish to keep your teeth shiny and to sustain the whiteness achieved.

The procedure is now successfully done!

Follow the instructions your dentist shares with you for long-term results.

Teeth whitening trays

Another method you might want to opt for is a teeth whitening kit which can let you achieve significant results. Filled with peroxide whitening gel, the whitening systems are custom-made and applied at our Sunnyvale office with a custom fitting form.

What clients say about our tooth whitening treatments in Sunnyvale, CA

A whitening treatment might be the best solution that could actually last a lifetime. Here’s what some of our clients had to say on our cosmetic dentistry services.

"I drink a lot of coffee every day so after a few decades of doing so, teeth do suffer... I booked and appointment with Trident and was able to come that week right away. Dr. Raja was amazing and made me feel super comfortable. The actual whitening took 20 minutes and I was out the door. Definitely recommend." (Google Review, 02.07.2022)

-Peter T.

"I quit smoking 3 years ago but my teeth kept reminding me. It was not horrible but I knew they used to be whiter. I called several dental clinics around here. Trident's website was modern and whoever picked up the phone that day was ultra nice. My whitening went smooth and I'm coming back for sure." (Google Review, 11.06.2021)

-Jessica L.

"I had fillings done with Dr. Tang, little to no pain, I didn't have to be numbed. I also got the tooth whitening. Lovette and Ellie were amazing, customer service was great, they were very knowledgeable about the procedure and aftercare, and made me fell very comfortable. I would recommend Trident Smiles Dental." (Yelp Review, 01.15.2021)

What is the most effective way to whiten teeth?

The two most effective whitening methods are the in-office whitening that provides long lasting results, and the teeth whitening trays for a quick whitening process.

Is it bad to whiten your teeth?

Whitening your teeth is considered safe as long as you have your teeth whitened professionally at the clinic.

How much does it usually cost to get your teeth whitened?

There are many factors that affect the price, such as the method you’re opting for and the type of whitening products used. At Trident, you don’t have to worry about financials as our team of experts will gladly help you with your dental insurance and financial arrangements.

Can yellow teeth become white?

With a professional whitening process, stains can be lifted and yellow teeth can become white again.

How can I permanently whiten my teeth?

Porcelain veneers are an ultra-thin shell of colored porcelain that can resolve a variety of dental issues and can as well help you whiten your teeth permanently. You can visit Trident Smiles Dental to inquire about any of the whitening methods involved.

How long does teeth whitening last?

Teeth whitening can last up to 3 years if you’re getting proper dental care and following your dentist’s recommendations. Coffee, smoking and acidic food can accelerate the growth of stains on your teeth.

Whitening veneers can last forever as it’s a procedure where enamel can’t grow back, which makes the whitening effect permanent.

How old do you have to be for teeth whitening?

We advise adolescents to be at least at the age of 16 before considering any whitening procedures. A whitening treatment can’t be done unless permanent teeth have fully erupted.

Does teeth whitening hurt?

The team at Trident is known for undergoing painless whitening procedures. Make sure to always inform your dentist of any sensitivities you might have before your treatment.

Fun facts about Teeth Whitening :)
  • Teeth whitening was discovered by accident.
  • Your teeth are like sponges, they absorb. Your teeth have pores just like your skin or a sponge. Anything you put in your mouth that has color will absorb into those pores.
  • Professional teeth whitening does not damage your teeth.
  • The key to teeth whitening is the delivery device. Unlike boil & bit trays, whitening strips, and UV lights, fitted whitening trays eliminate the possibility of inconsistencies and allow you to maintain your beautiful smile.
  • Sensitivity after teeth whitening is normal.
  • Stains on teeth cannot be removed overnight. Some stains take multiple sessions.

Pre-treatment instructions

It is CRITICAL to follow all the instructions to prepare for treatment. Your procedure WILL NOT be carried out, if these precautions are not followed. We reserve the right to cancel or postpone surgery if any of the instructions are not followed. If you have any questions, please call or text (408) 505-1777. Notify our practice of any changes to your health before your procedure.

  • You do not need to worry about eating beforehand as you will not be sedated. Have a meal before you come in. The appointment could take longer and you do not want to be hungry during the procedure.

Oral hygiene

  • Please brush your teeth and rinse thoroughly before treatment.
  • To decrease the risk of tooth sensitivity, use a desensitizing toothpaste such as Sensodyne Rapid Relief or Colgate Pro-relief a few days before your whitening appointment.

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing for the procedure. Your clothes may stain during the procedure so dress accordingly. Wear Flat-soled shoes that support your ankle.

  • Please arrive 10 minutes prior to your appointment. Time is set aside specifically to place your procedure. We have reserved enough time to ensure that the operation proceeds smoothly so that the outcome will be successful. If you feel you will have any problem keeping your appointment, please give us as much notice as possible so that we might utilize your time for another patient.

Driver / Caretaker

  • You do not need to worry about ride as you will not be sedated.

  • If you use tobacco or marijuana products, please refrain from using it at the day of the procedure and be prepared to stop for a period afterwards. It is advisable to use anti-smoking aids (Ex. Lozenge, Patch, Anti-smoking pills)

Notify our practice of any changes to your health before your procedure.

Post-treatment instructions

  • Avoid foods and beverages that stain (red sauce, blueberries, juice, coffee, tea, etc.)

  • Do not smoke for 48 hours

  • Mild sensitivity to hot or cold liquids may occur.  This usually passes within 1 – 2 days.  If sensitivity persists, we recommend taking over the counter pain medication.  We recommend combining two Ibuprofens (such as Motrin) with two Acetaminophens (such as Tylenol).

Oral hygiene

  • If you experience gum sensitivity do not brush the afflicted area while brushing your teeth.

  • Immediate whitening results can be quite dramatic due to minor dehydration of your teeth.  It is normal for the color to tone down somewhat after treatment when your teeth rehydrate to a natural white tone.
  • Long term results vary from patient to patient.  This can depend on the original shade of your teeth and include habits such as smoking or drinking colored beverages (red wine, coffee, tea, etc.)
  • Touch-up treatments may be needed every 6-12 months to retain color.  You are being sent home with take-home trays and Pola whitening gel to use as needed for touchups.  More whitening gel can be purchased as needed.
  • Existing fillings, crowns, bonding, etc. will not whiten.  Therefore, these may need to be changed to match your new smile.
Call your specialist if...
  • You develop an allergic reaction (rash, itching etc.)
  • You develop a fever
  • You develop a swelling
  • You notice a pimple forming on your gums
