What is Botox for TMJ?

TMD (temporomandibular disorder) is pain and tension in the jaw joint and the muscles that move it. It often comes from clenching or grinding your teeth, whether you do it during the day or while you sleep. Over time, those overworked muscles can cause jaw soreness, headaches, a clicking or locking jaw, and worn-down teeth.

Botox for TMJ is a therapeutic, non-cosmetic treatment. Dr. Ta places small, targeted injections into the chewing muscles (mainly the masseter and temporalis). This weakens their clench enough to ease the tension, and you can still eat, talk and smile normally.

Who is it for?

Botox for TMJ may be a good fit if you experience:

  • Jaw pain or soreness, especially in the morning
  • Frequent tension headaches or pain around the temples
  • Clenching or grinding your teeth (bruxism)
  • A tight, tired or “locked” jaw
  • Night guard use that protects your teeth but doesn’t relieve your pain

Botox vs. night guard: do I still need one?

A night guard and Botox work well together, but they do different jobs:

  • A night guard protects your teeth from grinding damage and gives only slight relief, because your muscles keep clenching.
  • Botox treats the source of the pain by relaxing the clenching muscles.

Many patients start with Botox to get their pain under control. You’ll likely still need a night guard to protect your teeth over the long term, but you won’t need it right away. Dr. Ta will recommend the right timing for you.

How long does it last?

Most patients start to feel relief within a few days, and the full effect usually develops over about two weeks. Results typically last 3–4 months, so we recommend a maintenance injection every 3–4 months to keep the muscles relaxed and the pain away.

FAQs

Dental Emergencies

FAQ Link
Is Botox for TMJ cosmetic?

No. At Trident, Botox for TMJ is a therapeutic treatment. The goal is to relieve jaw pain and muscle tension, not to change your appearance.

How quickly will I feel relief from TMJ Botox?
FAQ Link

Most patients start to notice relief within a few days, and the full effect usually develops over about two weeks. Everyone responds a little differently, and Dr. Ta will follow up to check your progress.

How long does Botox for TMJ last?
FAQ Link

Results typically last 3–4 months. To keep your jaw muscles relaxed and your pain under control, we recommend a maintenance injection every 3–4 months.

Do I still need a night guard with TMJ Botox?
FAQ Link

Probably, but not right away. A night guard protects your teeth from grinding and gives slight relief, while Botox relaxes the muscles that cause the pain. Many patients start with Botox and add a night guard later to protect their teeth over the long term.

Does the TMJ Botox injection hurt?
FAQ Link

Most patients describe it as a quick pinch. The treatment takes only a few minutes, and you can return to your normal routine right after.

Will Botox change how I look or how I chew?
FAQ Link

The dose is chosen to relax the muscles, not to freeze them, so you can still chew, talk and smile normally. With repeated treatments, some patients notice a slightly slimmer jawline, but that isn't the goal of this treatment.

Who is not a good candidate for TMJ Botox?
FAQ Link

Botox may not be recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have certain neuromuscular conditions, or are allergic to any of its ingredients. Dr. Ta will review your medical history before treatment.
